The oak trees are, the trees that run the ecosystem in Nothern California. Oak trees are conspicuous. They have that silhouette that spreads out in a nice round and sturdy form. And the lobes of oak leaves are unmistakable.
According to the statistics, the "oak woodland" dominates 10% of the land in California. The species called valley oak (Quercus lobata) seems to be a species that is quite popular around here. The valley oak acorns are long and its leaves are short, rounded and lobed.
It was raining hard when we went outside. Driving unknown ways in the rain is not too comfortable, but we managed to go around with many U-turns. We saw Brewer's blackbirds (Euphagus cyanocephalus, Icteridae) in the rain. Brewer's blackbirds are almost-black brown overall and are about the same size as robins. While female birds have brown eyes, male birds have yellow eyes. The blackbirds were flying low in the rain. The beaks of the Brewer's blackbirds are black and pointed.
