On the far reach of the California Highway, the mountains beyond are deep grey-green. On the hill around the corner over the winding roads, the cows grazed on grass. The roads make steep curves around the vineyards and the houses. In the woods, there are signs that say "NO HUNTING". In the pond, the white geese were searching for foods in the water.
At the edge of woods, the blue shadow of the Steller's Jays (Cyanocitta stelleri, Corvidae) passed by just in front of us and we stopped the car. The Steller's jay has a black head with a prominent crest, a blue body, and black legs and feet. A jay was pecking on the ground and when it raised its head, an acorn was in its mouth.
On the way to Calistoga, the car passed through a villege where you see people walking outside. Near by, there are a bunch of trailer houses, vineyards and wineries. According to the reports, more than half of the workers who work in the farms and the field in California are seasonal workers who reportedly make under the minimum wage and do not have the health insurances.
