Middletown, CA

Today was the day of rabbit since a rabbit was running in the vineyard. A dog was chasing it and it passed by in front of us like an arrow. The area was surrounded by the scenic, peaceful country side. Beyond the straight road that runs along the river, the quiet county park was there. The oak trees are in such a harmony with the surroundings that the whole park looked like it was under a spell. We saw the horse's footprints on the ground. A woodpecker was pecking on the tree trunk. The tree trunks have numerous holes on them that used by acorn woodpeckers (Picoides formicivorus, Picidae). We saw an acorn woodpecker carrying an acorn in its mouth. It has a curious habit of making holes on tree trunks and put acorns in them.

A type of hanging lichens called fishnet was on the trees. In the serene, spacious, and magestic park, under the bright sunshine, the lichen swayed and quivered by such a subtle flow of air. The fishnet lichen (Ramalina menziesii) body that hosts the algae is a combination of pale green ribbons and mesh.

It got warm in the afternoon, but when we went into the mountain and there was snow on the ground. The air was chilly in the morning despite the Californian sunshine and the blue sky. There was a golf course on the way to the forest. There was even a heliport near the entrance of the forest. A white truck of the forest guard and a red firestation truck was going back and forth. The manzanita flowers are pink and the small round leaves of manzanita are thick and well coated. The squirrels gave alarm calls as we went into the woods.

Go check orders and families of the birds. → Avian Taxonomy Applet
